Disruptive Innovation Drives 2015 Georgia Technology Summit Keynotes

Yesterday I took a break from the office to attend the annual Georgia Technology Summit (GTS) with one of our software engineers, David Cameron. With LBA Ware honored as one of the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG) Top 40 most innovative companies, Dave and I received complementary tickets to the event as well as an exhibit booth. The two of us had a wonderful time listening to the 3 keynote speakers and mingling amongst fellow innovators from the Peach state. Leaving the event feeling inspired, I felt it was only right to share what we learned and highlight some of our favorite quotes from the day.
TAG was point on with their selection of keynote speakers considering this year’s theme – Disruptive Innovations…The Power to Inspire. First off was Mr. Jim Chen, vice president of regulatory affairs and associate general counsel at Tesla. Mr.Chen spoke about the innovative philosophy at Tesla and even announced that the car company will be releasing a more economical model (around $35, 000) in 2017. I have a feeling I wasn’t the only person in the crowd of 1300 people hoping the state approves the company’s request to open 5 stores in time for that release.

As a disruptor…it’s about educating the consumer

– Jim Chen

Next up was Mr. John Rossman, author of The Amazon Way: 14 Leadership Principles of the World’s Most Disruptive Company. Mr. Rossman touched upon his experience as director of enterprise services at Amazon.com and shared his ‘rules of digital disruption,’ including what he considers necessary leadership principles for disruptive innovation success.

It’s not a matter of if – it’s a matter of when

– John Rossman

‘referring to the inevitable continued evolution of disruptive technologies.’

The last keynote speaker – my personal favorite – was Hal Gregersen, executive director of the MIT Leadership Center. Mr. Gregersen gave a thought provoking presentation on the process of disruptive innovations. Using Kodak film, a passion for photography, and a family tradition so-to-speak, Mr. Gregersen showed the crowd exactly what disruptive innovations are. Like straight out of Don Draper’s own Kodak presentation from the Mad Men “The Wheel” episode, Mr. Gregersen played on emotions to pull the audience in. Brilliant! Surely, whoever was thinking about lunch was now fully engaged in his presentation. After his speech, I went straight to the TAG table and purchased his most recent book, The Innovator’s DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators.

Innovation is a set of skills that people can see.

– Hal Gregersen

As you can probably tell, Dave and I categorize this year’s summit as a success. I overheard someone say “we have a lot of innovation happening in the state of Georgia.” Yesterday’s event was proof of all the innovating that’s going on, all of which rightfully deserve the recognition and celebration. TAG – thank you for hosting the event and for honoring LBA Ware for a second year in a row. We look forward to attending next year to see how innovations continue to evolve.

Congratulations to the other 39 companies that made the 2015 TAG Top 40. Keep on Innovating!
